On December 1, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a nationwide recall of thousands of blood-pressure medication bottles due to cross-contamination with a drug used to treat high cholesterol.

Around 11,100 bottles of the medication, sold under the brand name Ziac, were recalled after trace amounts of ezetimibe, a prescription drug used for the treatment of high cholesterol, were found in reserve samples. The recall was categorized as Class III, meaning the contamination is "not likely to cause adverse health consequences."

Essentially, a recall is a request from a manufacturer to return a product after the discovery of safety issues or product defects that might endanger the consumer or put the maker/seller at risk of legal action. And the practice is nothing new. Cars, for example, were being withdrawn from the market as early as 1973 in order for modifications to be carried out. Since then, thousands of different products have been subject to withdrawal, and even outright bans.
