It's been announced that AquaStar (USA) Corp has recalled over 85,000 bags of frozen shrimp sold between June 12 and September 17, 2025, due to concerns over possible contamination with cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the alert on September 21, citing insanitary conditions at the Indonesian supplier PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati.

Affected products include Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp, Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp, and AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers, distributed through major retailers such as Kroger, Ralphs, and Fred Meyer across 31 states.

While no shrimp have tested positive for cesium-137 and no illnesses have been reported, the FDA warns that prolonged exposure to the isotope—commonly linked to nuclear fission—may increase cancer risk. Consumers are advised to discard or return the recalled products for a refund. This follows a related recall involving Walmart’s Great Value shrimp, also sourced from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati. Full product details, including UPC codes and photos, are available on the FDA’s website.

While product recalls are routine—cars, for example, have been pulled from the market since as early as 1973—the scale and nature of this case underscore the importance of swift regulatory action and consumer vigilance.
