Japan started the New Year with a devastating natural disaster. On January 1, 2024, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, Japan. The quake and aftershocks mostly affected the Noto peninsula on the Sea of Japan coast, killing over 80 people and leaving a trail of destruction in a number of cities and towns.
