A powerful earthquake shook northeastern Afghanistan on August 31, killing more than 1,400 people and injuring more than 3,500, according to the country’s Taliban-run interior ministry. The quake struck Kunar province, near the Pakistan border, causing widespread destruction in the region.

The prospect of an earthquake is a terrifying one for many of us, and there have been a significant number of earthquakes in recent years. But is the frequency increasing?
