Disasters

At least 44 people have died in a massive fire that swept through several apartment blocks in Hong Kong, with the death toll expected to rise. Some buildings in the complex—home to many elderly residents—remain ablaze, in what is Hong Kong's deadliest fire since World War II.

The complex was being renovated and was covered in bamboo scaffolding. Three construction workers have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, with police accusing them of “gross negligence.”

Chief Executive John Lee, head of the Government of Hong Kong, said all housing estates undergoing major renovations will be inspected following the massive blaze.
