At least 69 people were killed and 11 remain missing after a massive fire tore through a hypermarket in the city of al-Kut, southern Iraq, on July 17, according to health officials and local police sources. Videos verified by Reuters show firefighters battling the flames and rescue teams helping people escape from the roof of the building.
The fire reportedly began in the section of the store that sells perfumes and cosmetics, which may have accelerated the blaze, an initial police report suggests. One eyewitness described the chaos inside: “Everyone was desperately trying to find a way out.”
Iraq’s Prime Minister has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and declared a period of national mourning.
