India’s pharmaceutical industry is preparing to launch low-cost versions of the weight-loss drug semaglutide after Novo Nordisk’s patent expires in March. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic, one of the world’s most popular injectable treatments for obesity and diabetes.

Analysts predict intense competition among Indian drugmakers, which could drive prices down by as much as 90%. Investment bank Jefferies estimates India’s semaglutide market could grow to US$1 billion, describing the patent expiry as a “magic pill moment.” Namit Joshi, chairman of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India, said companies are ready to release generic versions immediately after the patent expires.

At least 10 Indian firms, including Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla, and OneSource Specialty Pharma, have begun manufacturing preparations. Industry officials say monthly treatment costs in India could fall to around $40 over time. Similar price reductions are unlikely in the United States, where Ozempic’s patent protection extends into the 2030s.

In recent years, there has been a boom in people using the prescription medicine Ozempic and other medications in the same class. For some, it's an absolute lifeline as a treatment for diabetes. To others, one of its main side effects—sudden, fast weight loss—means its appeal lies solely in the significant number of pounds they can shed while on the medication. But what happens inside the body if you lose weight rapidly? A phenomenon known colloquially as "Ozempic face" offers some clues.
