The White House announced plans for a US$200 million ballroom, a long-time wish of President Donald Trump, on July 31. The project, funded by Trump and unnamed donors, will be built alongside a modernized East Wing, with construction set to begin in September.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the ballroom as a “much needed and exquisite addition” with 90,000 square feet (8,360 square meters) of space and seating for 650 guests. Currently, most large events are held in the East Room, which seats about 200.

The addition aims to replace the temporary tents used for state dinners and major events, often hosting world leaders. The project is expected to be completed well before Trump’s term ends in January 2029.

As the longtime home of the US president and the site of countless historic moments, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is recognized around the world. But beyond this new ballroom project, how much do you really know about the White House? Who built it, who owns it, or just how large it is?
