The United States European Command (EUCOM) has announced the seizure of an oil tanker linked to Russia after a pursuit that lasted more than two weeks across the Atlantic. The ship, the Marinera, is connected to both Russia and Venezuela.
Announced shortly after 9 am EST this January 7, US officials said the tanker broke US sanctions and was carrying Iranian oil. Early reports also said Russia sent a submarine and other vessels to protect the tanker during its journey.
Less than a hour after the announcement, the US seized a second oil tanker, the M/T Sophia, this time in the Caribbean Sea.
