Fatal accidents

An unidentified 38-year-old man has been seriously injured and received hospital assistance after being mauled by a shark on a Honolulu beach in Hawaii on May 30.

The man was swimming across Kaikoo when a shark near the channel at Hale Mano bit him. Though he managed to swim back to shore, the man suffered serious injuries to his lower extremities.

Shark warning signs were posted after the accident at Cromwell's Beach, as well as at Magic Island after two aggressive large sharks were seen near the Ala Moana Bowls surf break.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid affected waters as the area is being monitored for further shark activity, although the species of shark has not yet been identified.

Sharks are wild and unpredictable creatures. But while they are deadly predators, attacks on humans are rare. Still, it is important to remain vigilant when visiting beaches known for shark activity.
