On June 6, a 35-year-old man, who was spearfishing with his family off Michaelmas Island in Australia, died as a result of a shark attack. According to authorities, this marks the third death from deadly shark attacks within a month, a frequency that is unusual for Australia.
The man was rushed to hospital in the port city of Albany, where, despite paramedics’ attempts to revive him, he died.
The first of the three deadly attacks since May 16 involved a 38-year-old spearfisher, who was mauled by a white shark near Rottnest Island. Another victim, Michael Jensz, succumbed to head injuries sustained in a shark attack in the Great Barrier Reef.
Indeed, sharks are wild and unpredictable creatures. But while they are deadly predators, attacks on humans are rare. Still, it is important to remain vigilant when visiting beaches known for shark activity.
