What are the different types of skills? -

Skills are the abilities and attributes each of us possesses. Our skills are assessed and evaluated for "fit" when applying for different jobs. In short, there are hard skills and soft skills.

The following three slides will break down the differences between a hard skill and a soft skill.

How you obtain them -

Hard skills are garnered through work experience, education, training, and certifications. Soft skills, on the other hand, are gained through life experience inside and outside of work.

How you use them -

Hard skills are applied more directly when it comes to a career. Soft skills are more indirect and often complement hard skills. For example, you could be an office manager with great communication skills.

How you list them -

On your resume, hard and soft skills should be listed separately. While both are crucial for a great employee, it's easier for a hiring manager to view and evaluate them if they're separated.

How to list skills in your resume or CV: tailor skills to the job -

With each role you apply to, be sure to tailor your skills section on your resume. For example, if you're applying to be a backend developer, then something like customer service skills are less important and could even be left off the resume in this case.

Create a skills section -

A dedicated skills section is an excellent way for hiring managers to quickly see the skills you possess. Then they can make a judgment call on fit, or pass more effectively.

Match each skill with your proficiency level -

There will be skills that are challenging to measure, but for those that you can, put them on a proficiency scale. For hard skills, you can rank your proficiency from beginner to expert. This allows the hiring manager to get an idea of how you could be utilized and in what capacity.

Why should you list skills on your resume? -

Listing applicable skills on the resume also helps ATS (applicant tracking systems) pick up those words and makes it more likely your resume will be selected for further processing.

Problem-solving skills -

Being a good problem solver means being able to identify problems, find the root cause, and then developing or finding creative solutions. Problem-solving is an essential career skill to have.

Critical thinking skills -

Rationale and thoughtful thinking are the basis for critical thinking. Employers want to hire someone who is consistently thinking of better, faster ways to do everyday tasks.

Flexibility -

Your ability to be flexible (or lack thereof) will be noticed by an employer. It's best to fine-tune this skill and learn to go with the flow.

Communication skills -

No matter what you do for a living, it's essential that you can communicate a message to someone else. Communication includes things like oral and written communication, active listening, negotiation, persuasion, and more.

Organization skills -

Organization is more than just a clean space to work (though that's important, too). It's about having projects, tasks, and yourself in order. Show this on your resume by making it clear and easy to read.

Creativity -

Thinking outside the box is such a great skill to include on your resume. It can show an employer you go above and beyond and are genuinely a problem solver.

Emotional intelligence and people skills - Emotional intelligence means that you can identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. In a work context, this typically shows that you're even-tempered and can respond to adversities without losing control.

Attention to detail -

Attention to detail can save you (and others) a lot of headaches! Paying close attention means you avoid potentially costly errors, which employers value.

Responsibility -

Being able to own up to your mistakes when they do happen is a good sign of character. Most managers don't want to, nor have the time to, micromanage their employees, so being able to trust them is a big deal.

Time management -

Being able to proactively manage your time is a crucial skill. Invariably, there will be competing tasks that pop up throughout your workday, so being able to handle each of them accordingly will help you shine.

Teamwork -

Teamwork allows you to work efficiently and effectively with others to achieve a common goal. Whether you're part of an official team, a committee, or something more informal, you'll need to be able to work as a team.

Conflict resolution skills help alleviate misunderstandings or clashes that happen at work. Being able to resolve conflicts in a healthy, constructive way will put you far beyond colleagues when it comes to maturity and the ability to be promoted.

Interpersonal skills are what dictate if you can get along with others or not. For roles that involve people, interpersonal skills are especially beneficial to have and showcase on a resume or CV.

Self-motivation -

Including self-motivation on a resume is a smart idea. It shows hiring managers that they won't need to be constantly chasing you to complete tasks. Those who are self-motivated can monitor themselves and get done what needs to be completed, on time and in full.

Patience is truly a virtue. Not everything at work, or in life, will go how you want it to. Having patience means you can acknowledge this and react accordingly.

A great skill is the ability to speak in public or to audiences of various sizes and importance. Public speaking can be challenging for many, so if it's a skill of yours, be sure to include it on your resume or CV. It's sure to stand out in the best way.
