The wreckage of the Royal Navy warship HMS Nottingham has been found by a team of 10 divers, led by ProjectXplore, some 60 miles (96 km) off the coast of Scotland in the North Sea.
Back in April, sonar cameras found evidence of a wreck with similar dimensions, layout, and positioning to HMS Nottingham, which allowed for the diving expedition to positively identify the vessel this week. HMS Nottingham was attacked by a German submarine in 1916, and since then there have been dozens of attempts to locate it.
According to analysis by UNESCO, over three million shipwrecks are resting on the Earth's ocean floors. Some shipwrecks were lost to the annals of time, while others are miraculously well preserved, like the HMS Hawke, which sank in 1914 and was recently discovered off the Aberdeenshire (Scotland) coast on August 12, 2024.
