A ferry carrying more than 350 people sank early this January 26 near an island in the southern Philippines, leaving at least 15 people dead, officials said. Rescuers managed to save at least 316 passengers after the vessel went down shortly after midnight, prompting an overnight search-and-rescue operation in the area.

The inter-island cargo and passenger ferry was traveling from the port city of Zamboanga to Jolo Island in Sulu province with 332 passengers and 27 crew members when it reportedly encountered technical problems, this according to the Philippine Coast Guard. The vessel sank in calm weather about one nautical mile off the village of Baluk-baluk in Basilan province, officials said.

Indeed, from infamous ships like the Titanic to lesser-known but equally important vessels such as the SS Eastland and the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, history has had no shortage of such tragedies.
