Sixteen people have been rescued and 11 more are believed to be missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Baja California on October 16. Survivors were injured in apparent shark attacks, according to a statement from the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
Rescuers provided lifesaving care as they transported the survivors to hospitals in San Diego. Several “were suffering from severe injuries consistent with shark bites,” according to the Coast Guard.
USCG Lt. Santiago Tamburini told the CBC: “People were holding onto each other, to debris, just treading and trying to stay above water before being rescued.”
The incident did not happen in US waters. Search-and-rescue operations are continuing with support from the Mexican Navy.
