At least 14 migrants have died in Greece after a speedboat carrying them collided with a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel late on February 3 in the Chios Strait, Greek authorities said.
Officials reported that the migrant boat was making dangerous maneuvers and was being pursued at the time of the collision, though the Coast Guard has not yet clarified the exact circumstances leading up to the crash.
Twenty-four people were rescued overnight, some with serious injuries, while others are still reported missing. Greek state broadcaster ERT said the injured included seven children, a pregnant woman, and two Coast Guard officers.
Indeed, from infamous ships like the Titanic to lesser-known but equally important vessels such as the SS Eastland and the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, history has had no shortage of such tragedies.
