Who exactly is Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz?
Walz went head-to-head with JD Vance in their first vice presidential debate on Tuesday night
© Getty Images
Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz appeared on CBS to debate Republican VP nominee JD Vance on Tuesday, October 1. Walz reportedly told Harris that he wasn't a strong debater when she approached him about running with her, and he appeared somewhat nervous and uncomfortable during the debate. Vance, on the other hand, was confident and calm. Unlike the fiery debate between Harris and Trump, Walz and Vance made attempts to be civil and even agreed on certain talking points. Political commentators have noted that Walz failed to attack Vance the way Harris attacked Trump, and instead focused on getting his own points across. Walz touched on abortion and school shootings, while Vance brought almost every debate topic back to his anti-immigration rhetoric. The general consensus is that there was no overwhelming winner in terms of performance, and CNN's instant poll found that viewers were closely divided in their opinions.
Before he was introduced by Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's nominee for vice president in the 2024 United States presidential election, it's fair to say few of us had heard of Tim Walz. Now his is a name on everybody's lips. Serving as the governor of Minnesota since 2019, Tim Walz could well be elevated to the world stage by year's end as the second most powerful politician in the US. But who exactly is this man, originally from rural Nebraska, whose name is now familiar to millions?
Click through and learn more about the guy they call "Coach Walz."
