Eastern and southern Spain have been hit by torrential rains that have caused flash floods in several parts of the country. The storm, which began on October 29, has been attributed to a weather phenomenon known as the gota fría, or “cold drop”. Within hours the country experienced a year’s worth of rain and Valencia was the worst hit area.
The floods not only caused extensive damage to property and disrupted road, rail, and air travel, but the events also claimed lives. The exact number of the final death toll is not yet known, but according to Spanish authorities, over 200 people have lost their lives so far and many people are still missing.
