The UK has deployed military vessels to protect undersea cables and pipelines from potential Russian submarine threats, John Healey, the UK's defense minister, announced on April 9.
Russian submarines operated in British waters for over a month earlier this year, prompting concerns about their intentions. The British government believes Russia exploited international attention on Middle Eastern crises to mask the covert deployment in the High North region, a strategically vital region with key shipping routes and critical infrastructure such as undersea cables.
British forces, working alongside Norwegian allies, monitored the Russian vessels and prevented any hostile activity. The submarines have since departed, and no damage to underwater infrastructure has been reported.
By making the operation public at a press conference, Healey aimed to send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that British intelligence had successfully detected the activity. The announcement underscores growing Western concerns about Russian operations near key maritime assets.
"To President Putin, I say, 'We see you. We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences,'" he said.
