On October 15, the Italian Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FIEG) filed a formal complaint with Italy’s communications watchdog, Agcom, demanding to open an investigation into Google’s AI Overviews feature.
The publishers claim that AI-generated summaries are a "traffic killer" that greatly contributes to the reduced visibility and discoverability of Italian news sites. FIEG further argues that the growing use of this AI feature is already impacting advertising revenues, threatening the long-term economic sustainability of the country’s media sector.
Besides Italy, similar complaints have also recently been filed in other EU nations. Indeed, the impact of AI on traditional business models is a pressing issue—and not limited to the publishing industry alone.
With the changing technology landscape today, individuals have begun to worry about whether artificial intelligence will impact the job market globally. The short answer is yes, it will, but probably not in the ways you'd imagine.
