The Trump administration is considering adding another 36 countries to the list of nations subject to no entry. The order is part of a memo sent by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to diplomats on June 14. It also included a list of requirements that this group of nations must follow in the next 60 days in order to avoid enforcement of the ban.
The vast majority of nations included in the ban are in Africa. Notably, these include US allies such as Egypt and Djibouti, the later a country that hosts the largest US military base in Africa.
The Trump administration declared that the ban is being imposed because these countries fail to provide proper registration for their citizens or have uncooperative governments.
The planned ban is yet another escalation in immigration policy, which has been getting harsher and is part of a series of controversial orders that President Donald Trump has issued since the first day of his second term.
Other contentious actions include the pardoning of those involved in the January 6 attempted takeover of the US Capitol, which left five dead and over 170 injured. Trump has also repealed many of Joe Biden's orders and taken decisive positions regarding international climate agreements and the social media platform TikTok, among other measures—leaving many world leaders concerned about the potential repercussions over the next four years.
