When it comes to finding alternatives to oil and gas, one of the most promising solutions is nuclear fuel. However, nuclear fuel is also one of the most controversial options, not least because scientists have not yet worked out what to do with the waste generated during its production.
In southwest Finland, developers are putting the finishing touches on a nuclear waste disposal facility that may provide a solution to this problem. With plans for the disposal facility first approved by the Finnish government in 2000, the day that Onkalo becomes operational is long awaited. Not everyone is convinced by the solution, however.
