Denmark has banned all civilian drone flights ahead of a European Union summit in Copenhagen, the country's transport minister announced on September 28. The move is intended to make police security operations easier and to prevent “foreign drones creating uncertainty and disruption.”
The decision comes after a wave of drone incidents across Europe, including unidentified drones spotted over Danish military sites as recently as September 27. Authorities are still investigating who is behind the incursions.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has not ruled out Russia’s involvement. Europe has been on high alert in recent weeks, with several NATO member states reporting suspected Russian incursions into their airspace.
Once a more cooperative partnership, ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Moscow have deteriorated sharply, today resembling the tense standoff of the Cold War. NATO leaders view Russia as a direct security threat, but repeated warnings and condemnations from the Alliance have so far had little effect on the Kremlin.
