Germany’s top intelligence official has issued a warning about Russia’s intentions toward Europe, saying that a direct confrontation could erupt without warning. Martin Jäger, the recently appointed head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), told lawmakers in Berlin on October 13 that Russian President Vladimir Putin is determined to “test borders,” challenge European security, and undermine NATO.
Jäger said Russia’s strategy goes beyond Ukraine, describing its actions as part of a wider effort to destabilize democracies, divide Western societies, and intimidate citizens across the continent. He cautioned that complacency could be dangerous, adding that “our adversary knows no rest or respite.”
According to the spy chief, European nations must be prepared for aggression sooner rather than later. “We are already under fire today,” he warned.
NATO has long viewed Russia as its primary security threat, but the alliance now faces growing concerns that the Cold War-style tension could once again turn hot. Click through the following gallery to understand how relations between Russia and NATO reached this breaking point.
