A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan on the evening of June 11, with Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration registering a magnitude of 6.4. The tremor, centered about 71 kilometers (roughly 40 miles) south of Hualien City, shook buildings in the capital Taipei just after 7:01 pm local time.

The United States Geological Survey measured the quake at a slightly lower 5.9 magnitude, a difference commonly seen due to varied monitoring methods.

Despite the tremor being felt widely, particularly in northern Taiwan, there were no immediate reports of serious damage. Hualien, located along Taiwan’s less densely populated east coast, frequently experiences seismic activity due to the island’s position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world.

Indeed, earthquakes strike without warning, causing destruction and endangering lives within seconds. But knowing how to protect yourself before, during, and after an earthquake can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death. Whether you're indoors, outdoors, or in a vehicle, quick and informed actions can make all the difference.
