US$2.7 trillion: World's military spending sees sharpest increase since Cold War

Global military spending reached a record US$2.718 trillion in 2024, marking a 9.4% increase from the previous year, the steepest rise since the end of the Cold War. The increase was widespread across all regions, with Europe and the Middle East seeing particularly rapid growth.

The United States, China, Russia, Germany, and India led the way, accounting for 60% of global military spending, totaling US$1.635 trillion, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

This marks the 10th consecutive year of rising global military investment. In the case of Europe, military spending, including Russia, spiked by 17% to US$693 billion, making it the largest contributor to the global increase in 2024.

The world's top military powers are defined by their strategic capabilities, technological advancements, and global influence. These nations maintain robust defense systems, including advanced air and naval forces, and powerful nuclear arsenals. Their strength is demonstrated through involvement in current global conflicts, such as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict. As a key military alliance, NATO plays a crucial role in coordinating defense efforts and countering global threats.
