The Trump administration has introduced guidance allowing immigration officials to deny green cards based on an applicant's political expression. Activities such as social media posts, protests, or views deemed “anti-American” could trigger increased scrutiny. Officials say the policy protects national security, while critics warn it raises serious concerns about free speech and civil liberties.

 

This move also reflects a broader global trend toward increased digital surveillance. Governments worldwide, regardless of economic status, are investing heavily in technologies to monitor their populations, particularly through social media. Often with limited oversight, these systems, powered by advances in artificial intelligence and deep neural networks, enable the mass tracking of online activity and may discourage digital activism.

 

The United States is among the countries deeply invested in monitoring the social media activity of its citizens, immigrants, and visitors, a practice that has been ongoing for nearly two decades. However, concerns are growing. In early 2025, immigrants, including legal residents, reportedly faced serious consequences tied to their online activity and public protests.
