British-born Edith Cavell served as a nurse in Brussels during the First World War.

She is celebrated for treating wounded soldiers from both sides without discrimination during the conflict, and is regarded as a pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium. As the war progressed, she began helping wounded Allied soldiers escape the clutches of German forces. But Cavell's heroic deeds cost her dear.
