Social media influencers are endangering the last 200 uncontacted peoples on Earth as they attempt to monetize videos of first encounters with these isolated tribes. Such contact could be deadly, as these communities lack immunity to common diseases found in the interconnected world.
This warning comes from a new report by the organization Survival International, which will be presented this October 27 in the presence of Hollywood icon Richard Gere.
The report outlines that the main threats to these tribes, 188 of whom live in South America, are human-driven climate change, logging, mining, and farming mainly driven towards Global North interests. Among the emerging threats, besides influencers, are drug traffickers and evangelical missionaries seeking to convert these isolated groups.
The report warns that half of these tribes could disappear in 10 years if no protective actions are taken. In this gallery, you'll get to know more about these tribes. Simply click on.
