Pensions are the main source of income for older people in Europe, according to the OECD. In many European countries, state pensions and benefits account for over 70% of older adults’ total equivalized gross household income, exceeding 80% in some cases. But how much do Europeans actually receive in retirement?
According to Eurostat, in 2022, the average old-age pension expenditure per beneficiary in the EU was €16,138 (US$17,400), or about €1,345 ($1,450) per month. However, pension levels vary widely across Europe, revealing stark East-West and gender divides. Women in the EU receive on average 26.1% less pension income than men, due to lower lifetime earnings, part-time work, and career interruptions.
