The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem is one of the holiest sites in Christendom. According to Christian belief, the church stands where Jesus was crucified, buried, and then resurrected. Among the ecclesiastical attractions associated with the church is an ancient ladder that's seen propped against a wall over the entrance to the building. The ladder has long been a source of mystery and conjecture, and, while it's exact purpose has never been determined, the innocuous-looking steps have come to symbolize the divisions and religious disputes within the Christian world. But why is this humble artifact known as the Immovable Ladder, and who put it there?
