Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump, bringing an end to 12 days of escalating conflict that rattled the Middle East. The truce was accepted just hours after Iran launched a final wave of missiles at Israel, killing at least four people.

In a televised statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel’s acceptance of the ceasefire, saying it was coordinated with President Trump and came after Israel had achieved all its strategic objectives. These included neutralizing threats from Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, striking key government and military sites, and asserting aerial dominance over Tehran.

President Trump announced the truce in the early morning of June 24, urging both nations to respect the agreement. “Please do not violate it,” he said. Iran had previously stated it would halt its attacks only if Israel did the same.

The recent tensions mark the latest chapter in a long history of conflict between Israel and Iran, which has escalated recently as Israel launched strikes against Iranian targets. One of the first nations to recognize the state of Israel, Iran took a sharp turn after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Today, Iran is one of the strongest advocates of Palestinian resistance against Israeli forces in Gaza, further aggravating tension between Israel and Iran.

So, what exactly happened between the nations to now lead to a war? Click on to find out.
