Cockroaches have been around since the age of the dinosaurs. Yet despite their impressive longevity, roaches rank among the most repellant of insects. They are hated for their ability to spread disease and their unpleasant appearance and smell. This despite the fact that cockroaches actually play a positive and multifaceted role in various ecosystems. No matter, though: the mere sight of one of these bugs is enough to induce a range of negative emotions, anything from disgust to anxiety, stress, and embarrassment.

Roaches are ubiquitous in some of America's largest cities and metropolitan areas. In fact, the American Housing Survey has identified 15 cities that are especially prone to roach infestations.
