Medical students in the UK are practicing their communication skills using artificial intelligence that simulates real patients.
The system, introduced by Dr. Chris Jacobs at Great Western Hospital together with the University of Bristol and the University of Bath, allows students to interact with AI patients that have realistic faces, voices, and emotional responses. Jacobs says the technology helps students practice more often and in a safe environment, reducing the need for role-play between students or actors. Moreover, better communication can prevent misdiagnosis and reduce costs for the NHS. For many decades, artificial intelligence was considered a product of science fiction, a world with futuristic robots, self-thinking machines, and complex systems far removed from our everyday concerns. But in reality, AI is no longer a distant dream or a luxury of advanced research labs.
It’s here, now, woven subtly yet powerfully into the daily fabric of our lives. Often working behind the scenes, AI is helping us write emails more efficiently, navigate traffic with greater ease, make smarter purchasing decisions, and even detect health problems before symptoms appear. Some of the most mundane tasks in our lives are now powered by AI. Can you guess which ones they are? Click through this gallery to find out.
