The recent pledge by France to recognize Palestine as a state marks the latest move by a number of countries to acknowledge Palestine's right to statehood. But the announcement by President Macron has drawn angry rebukes from both the United States and Israel. Furthermore, other members of the G7, for example the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan, insist that Palestinian statehood must be contingent on a two-state solution, and should be realized only as part of a negotiated peace between Israel and Palestinians.
