Copenhagen wears its independent streak proudly. One day you might find yourself sipping coffee in true hygge style, the next swimming at the city’s pristine beaches, and by the weekend heading into Denmark’s wild countryside for a camping trip. Add to that the daily river of cyclists, eco-conscious living, striking architecture, and a thriving food and music scene, and you’ll see why the city is hailed as a hub of creativity and free thought.

Yet nowhere is this bold spirit more tangible than in Freetown Christiania. Founded in the early 1970s when squatters pried open a decommissioned military base, this “autonomous community” grew into a neighborhood of colorful houses, art, and a lifestyle that proudly lives outside the usual rules.

Step inside Christiania, and you’ll discover a living, breathing experiment in freedom, one that’s as photogenic as it is fascinating. Click through the gallery and see for yourself!
