When World War II erupted in Europe in 1939, tanks, planes, and mechanized armies meant that devastation occurred on a much larger and much faster scale than any war that came before. As a result, both the Allied and Axis powers introduced a new strategy to their war campaigns: deception.
On both sides of the battlefield, governments and bureaucrats turned to spies, saboteurs, and codebreakers to outwit rivals.
