On the morning of September 24, 2025, a roughly 164-foot-

(50-m-)

deep sinkhole appeared just outside Vajira Hospital in Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok. The hole engulfed power lines and even swallowed a vehicle. But while no casualties were reported, the disaster certainly raises questions about why this happened in the first place.

It may seem surprising, but sinkholes are an incredibly common occurrence around the globe. The Earth is far more restless than it appears, and is constantly in flux thanks to the weather and even humans.
