The name Ed Gein has become synonymous with some of the most grotesque and disturbing crimes in American history. Born in rural Wisconsin in the early 20th century, his life was defined by isolation, abuse, and an obsessive attachment to his domineering mother.

When Gein’s crimes were revealed in 1957, investigators uncovered not only the murders of two women, but also a house filled with objects crafted from exhumed corpses. The killer’s farmstead had been turned into a chilling “house of horrors.” Now, Netflix has released a new season of ‘Monster’ that dives into his horrendous crimes.

So, who, exactly, was Ed Gein? And what caused him to become known as the "Butcher of Plainfield"? Click on to find out.
