In early October 2025, it was announced that Dame Sarah Mullally would be taking up the mantle as Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the first woman ever to lead the worldwide Anglican Communion. Mullally’s appointment does not only bring faith and devotion into the mix, but also the clinical precision of medicine.
Indeed, before she wore a bishop’s miter, Mullally carried a nurse’s badge, working among the sick and dying with the same sense of calling that now guides her through the challenges of Church leadership. She truly has come far, and may even guide the Church through a period of healing and renewal.
But who, exactly, is Sarah Mullally? And how did she rise through the ranks of the Anglican Communion? Click on to find out.
