History has recorded the extinction of numerous species of wildlife. Habitat loss, hunting, pollution, and other human activities have all exacted a terrible toll on the natural world, with countless animals and birds vanishing forever. But nature is remarkably resilient. And thanks to concerted conservation efforts, some species once on the very brink of disappearing for good have managed to return and thrive against all odds. More than that, they are now showing signs of population growth.
Conservation success stories in 2025 include giant panda numbers reaching record levels and the Iberian lynx pouncing back from oblivion. And there are more animals that have rebounded from danger over the past 12 months.
