The 2025 Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index is out, drawing on data from 2.2 million adults and high-school English assessments across 123 countries and regions. The index uses a three-year rolling average of EF SET scores to stabilize yearly fluctuations, combining each country’s current results with those from the previous two years. Once national scores are calculated, they are used to build population-weighted regional and global rankings. Countries are then placed into proficiency bands based on score thresholds: Very High (600–800), High (550–599), Moderate (500–549), Low (450–499), and Very Low (1–449).
