Legendary John Singleton among progressive Oscar firsts
The director has passed away at age 51, leaving an immense legacy behind

The Academy Awards have a long history of failing to represent diverse talent in cinema. Along the way, however, gifted figures have set down enormous milestones—one of those figures being John Singleton. The famed director of 'Boyz n the Hood' and 'Poetic Justice' died on April 29 after suffering a stroke, at just 51 years old. But, in the short time he had, Singleton smashed glass ceilings, becoming the first black filmmaker to be nominated for Best Director, and consequently inspiring a new generation of filmmakers.
