The famed Cannes Film Festival is one of the most hotly anticipated events of the year. With its premier screenings and prestigious awards, it's the most glamorous, star-studded film festival in the world. Needless to say, all the biggest celebrities attend, and their red carpet appearances are nothing short of iconic. The festival is known for its high fashion and strict rules, which stars often enjoy flouting. You better believe there have been some spectacular moments over the years!
One such (in)famous moment was created at this year's awards ceremony when jury president Spike Lee accidentally announced the winner of the festival's top honor, the Palme d'Or, early. Following a miscommunication with the host, French actress Toria Dillier, Lee prematurely revealed Julia Ducournau's film 'Titane' to be the recipient of this year's Palme d'Or. The audience gasped and Lee realized his error, though Ducournau, only the second female filmmaker to ever be awarded the top honor, didn't hold it against him.
Lee later apologized, saying he "messed up, simple as that. And I was very specific to speak to the people of Titane ... I apologized, they said, 'Forget about it, Spike.' So, that means a lot to me." His fellow jury member Maggie Gyllenhaal said the error "was like an injection of humanity into the middle of the ceremony," Deadline reports.
Lee rushed back to the stage before Sharon Stone was scheduled to present the award and said, "In 63 years of life I've learned that people get a second chance, this is my second chance," he prefaced. "I apologize for messing up. It took a lot of suspense out of the night I understand, it wasn't on purpose."
