The best music movies for people who hate musicals
If you love music but hate singsongy stories, this is the list for you
© NL Beeld
Are you one of those people who nods along when someone talks about ‘Grease’ or ‘Moulin Rouge,’ just waiting for the subject to change? Did you cringe while watching ‘Mamma Mia,’ and does going to Broadway sound like a horrible way to spend your time and money?
Fear not, for you are not alone! Musicals rely on strategically placed songs to advance the plot, instead of dialogue, and for many people that concept is absolutely torturous. But it doesn’t make you less of a music fan, and you can still enjoy a combination of song and plot.
The marriage of music and movies is a beautiful thing—they’ve been huge influences for each other, as hit songs catapulted off film soundtracks and up the charts, and as entire films have been based on songs.
Luckily, there are a slew of films that take place within the music industry, or that feature music-obsessed characters, or they simply have a soundtrack so good that the film wouldn’t be the same without it.
Check out this gallery to see some of the greatest music movies that aren’t musicals.
