Major female film roles that were originally meant for men
Heroines that almost weren't
Back in the early 2010's when Sandra Bullock was growing fed up with the lack of interesting female characters on offer, she appealed to filmmakers and asked whether there were any male roles out there that they wouldn't mind switching to female. Her proactivity landed her the leading role in David Gordon Green's 'Our Brand Is Crisis,' a part that was originally written with George Clooney in mind.
The gender switch made for 'Our Brand Is Crisis' was not the first of its kind; in fact, there are a fair few films whose leading female characters were originally written as male. In some cases, the script was altered once a woman was cast in the role. In others, it was kept pretty much exactly the same.
