The establishment of the American film production and distribution company United Artists (UA) in 1919 was one of the most significant events in cinema history. For the first time, actors, producers, and directors had complete control over their own financial and artistic interests, rather than being dependent upon commercial studios.
For about 60 years, the company was responsible for producing some of the greatest movies of the age, films that included 'The African Queen' (1951) and 1960's 'West Side Story.' Then in 1980, a decision was made to back an epic Western that would destroy UA's reputation and ultimately bring down the company.
