Religious impact
Many secular singers got their start in church before making a name for themselves in the music industry. Could there be a correlation between faith and succes? According to a report published in Time Magazine, religion can be a source of comfort, which also improves well-being. Whether it is in the lives of children or adults, research shows that it can have a positive force in a human's live. Clinical psychologist of religion and Dean of the School of Psychology and Counseling, Bill Hathaway, declares that religion in fact can produce a higher sense of self esteem. "Religion is related to the child having a higher sense of self esteem, better academic adjustment and lower rates of substance abuse and delinquent or criminal behavior," Hathaway says.
Legendary voices
There are plenty of examples of famous people who started as choristers in their local churches before being the internationally acclaimed stars they are now. With legendary big voices such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston or Diana Ross, it is quite obvious that there has always been a connection between gospel and secular music. But it's not just powerhouse women that have made the leap.
