There is virtually a world of guitar pedals out there that will do anything from distorting a sound to looping. Every guitarist enjoys pedals. If they like Ed Sheeran, they may appreciate a loop pedal. If they like Jimi Hendrix, they will love an overdrive pedal.

Guitars are expensive and annoying to try to prop up. You only realize the value of a guitar hook after letting a guitar fall and break in half.

These are great because there is virtually a world of guitar straps, from fluffy luminous green ones to tan-brown leather. Choose one that suits their personality.

This is another tiny thing that many guitarists only realize is necessary when their guitar falls from the strap while they're performing.

No matter what level a guitar player is, a guitar tuner is a must, especially one that clips onto the neck so that you don't have to get out your smartphone every time you need to tune the guitar.

Guitar case/bag -

Whether you are bringing your guitar to a gig, a friend's house for the evening, or the beach, a case or bag is necessary. Cases are generally more expensive, so if they're a beginner with a cheap guitar, a bag will work just fine.

These mini amps are fantastic for practicing. They sound just like an amp, but instead plug into and sit on the guitar. They will also make everyone who lives with a guitarist's life much easier because they're not very loud, as opposed to a full-size amp.

Guitar leads inevitably break, especially cheap ones. These will always be used and can last for years if they're of good quality and looked after.

These are great for keeping rhythm while playing guitar.

Every musician was inspired by someone, so music posters are a no-brainer when buying for any guitarist.

Musicians will also usually be listening to and studying music they love all the time. Why else would they play? If they're listening for long periods, you can protect their aural health by getting them a decent pair of headphones.

Musicians don't usually like to practice with a metronome when they're starting because it's surprisingly hard to stay in time with one. However, it improves your playing ten-fold.

This goes hand in hand with the recording, but also for performing. Pointing a Shure SM57 at the 12th fret of an acoustic guitar works very well for playing live.

Foot stool -

While playing guitar, people instinctually try to raise the foot on which the guitar is sat. People do this by lifting their foot onto its ball. However, this is not the correct way to play. All classical guitar players use these foot stools. They're a must for serious players.

A book -

If they prefer to learn the old-fashioned way, by reading and learning about music theory, you can get them a book they can learn from. Alternatively, you could get them a book about their favorite guitarist or band or a book of chords to some of their favorite songs.

Vinyl record player -

There's quite a lot to say about the quality of sound that comes from a turntable and record. If who you're buying for is a music fan (which they inevitably are if they're learning an instrument), why not get them a record player? If that's too expensive, you can get them a vinyl to frame and hang on their wall.

As they're learning guitar and are a music fan, they will certainly enjoy going to a gig to see one of their favorite bands.
