You won't find a Ford Mustang on Mackinac Island. In fact, you won't see any cars. But you'll nonetheless find horsepower of a different kind. That's because this is a place where the horse is king, the animals having replaced internal combustion engines over a century ago.

Mackinac Island is one of America's favorite summer and fall destinations. Anchored in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas, the island is unique for its strict no-car policy. Instead, the primary mode of transportation is either by horse and carriage or the humble bicycle. But whether by four legs or two wheels, exploring this fascinating environment is to discover a past shaped by Indigenous culture, revolutionary war, landmark architecture, Hollywood celebrities, and presidential patronage. And all this without the sound of a single car engine!
