Keibul Lamjao National Park holds the unique distinction
of being the world's only floating national park.
Located in the
northwestern Indian state of Manipur, Keibel Lamjao preserves
a series of floating islands called "phumdis"—masses of accumulated decaying vegetation found on Loktak Lake that play a key role in maintaining the park's fragile ecosystem.
Keibel Lamjao is home to a collection of rare flora and fauna, including the critically endangered Sangai deer. The park also sustains fishing communities that live on floating huts. But Keibel Lamjao is under threat, the delicate habitats at risk from climate change and other factors.
This gallery takes you into a national park unlike any other. It also reveals Keibul Lamjao's increasing vulnerability that could see Loktak Lake disappear forever. Click to continue reading.
